Sejak Kapan Toponimi “Watu Gong” Jadi Nama Wihara?
Watu Gong adalah batu alam yang ditemukan di pelataran rumah Goei Tjwan Ling (Ir. Sutopo, Msc), di Pudak Payung, Semarang. Waktu itu, sekitar pertengahan tahun 1950-an, pemerintah melakukan usaha pelebaran jalan di jalur Semarang-Solo/Yogya. Termasuk ruas jalur di daerah Pudak Payung, Banyumanik, Semarang, tempat dimana villa yang menjadi wihara sementara bernama Wihara Buddha Gayā berada.
Saat pelebaran berlangsung tepat di halaman Wihara Buddha Gayā, alat kerja kuli bangunan mengantuk benda keras pada lereng tanah. Setelah tanah berhasil dibongkar, benda keras itu ternyata sebongkah batu besar yang sulit bisa dipecah. Bongkahan batu kemudian menggelinding turun ke tepi jalan bersamaan dengan tanah yang selesai dikepras.
Setelah batu diamati para pekerja, ternyata bentuknya unik. Bentuk bongkahan batu menyerupai bentuk gong (salah satu jenis ricikan alat musik Jawa). Berdasarkan bentuk yang unik itu, para pekerja mempertimbangkan untuk menyimpan batu berbentuk gong dimaksud dengan menggotongnya beramai-ramai. Oleh para pekerja, batu “Watu Gong” yang berbentuk gong berhasil dipindahkan ke pekarangan villa Goei Tjwan Ling. Tepatnya di bawah sebuah pohon beringin atau di kemudian hari berada persis di jalan masuk menuju Wihara (sebelum dipugar tahun 2000).
Pada saat itu, pekarangan villa belum tertutup pagar dan masyarakat sekitar dengan bebas bisa melintas pekarangan. Oleh masyarakat sekitar, daerah dimana Wihara Buddha Gayā berada kemudian disebut dengan nama “Watu Gong”.
Selanjutnya, oleh para aktivis perintis kebangkitan Buddha Dharma di Indonesia yang bermarkas di Wihara Buddha Gayā. Toponimi Watu Gong dijadikan filosofi semangat pemutaran roda Dharma. Nilai filosofisnya adalah, bahwa Gong kebangkitan Buddha Dharma ditabuh (tanda mulai) dari Wihara Buddha Gayā.
Tidak Tercantum Pada Peta Zaman Belanda
Merujuk peta pada zaman Belanda, sampai tahun 1900-an, daerah ini masih bernama Poedak Pajoeng. Namun sesudah toponimi “Watu Gong” dikenal masyarakat luas, terdapat usaha-usaha untuk menuliskan asal-usulnya. Pada sekitar tahun 1980-an, terdapat gagasan yang dicetuskan oleh salah satu pejabat Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Kota Semarang. Si Pejabat mengusulkan adanya penulisan legenda tentang asal-usul nama-nama daerah di Kota Semarang. Termasuk nama dan asal usul (toponimi) “Watu Gong”.
Dengan sayembara ini, beramai-ramailah para penulis fiksi menyusun cerita tentang asal usul nama “Watu Gong” sesuai imajinasi masing-masing. Salah satu penulis fiksi menuliskan kisah “Watu Gong” terkait kutukan seorang sakti yang sedang menyebarkan agama baru. Ada pula penulis yang menuliskannya dengan narasi lain. Melalui karya tulis ini, penulis mengoreksi mitos-legenda yang selama ini sudah memasyarakat. Bahwa batu yang disebut “Watu Gong” tidak terkait dengan cerita-cerita apapun yang dikarang penulis fiksi dimaksud.
Sebagai bukti, batu yang dianggap hasil kutukan orang sakti tersebut tetap saja pecah. Batu ini pecah setelah tiga kali dipindah tempat. Pertama dari bawah pohon beringin (sekarang gazebo Pagoda Avalokitesvara). Kedua dipindahkan ke pagar pintu masuk (pos satpam). Dan terakhir di depan pintu gapura Sanchi sebelum memasuki halaman Dhammasālā yang berbentuk mandala Borobudur.
Benca Cagar Budaya, “Watu Gong” dan Arca Ganesha di Bukit Kassapa-Gemruning
Tak jauh dari Wihara Buddha Gayā, Watu Gong, terdapat batu berbentuk gong yang merupakan Benda Cagar Budaya (BCB). Batu “Watu Gong” yang satu ini pernah menjadi sarana puja masyarakat Siwa Buddha Kuna. Letak batu “Watu Gong” berada di Bukit Kassapa-Gemruning atau tepat di belakang Markas Kodam IV Diponegoro. Bagaimana dan seperti apa BCB “Watu Gong” yang dimaksud?
